Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County offers free help with your lawn and landscape problems or management recommendations. Residents may call 402-441-7180 Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m. to Noon during the growing season, and speak to a Master Gardener. Samples for plant, insect or disease identification can be mailed or brought to Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County, 444 Cherrycreek Road, Suite A, Lincoln, NE 68528 during office hours M-F, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Digital images may be submitted to http://digitaldiagnostics.unl.edu for help from Nebraska Extension horticulture experts.

All speaker requests are subject to availability. Please note that due to the volume of requests received, groups are limited to one horticulture program request per year. A minimum of 30 days notice are required for all speaker visits. Staff will contact you with a confirmation call or e-mail.

Program cost:

  • $45.00 per 30 minute program
  • $75.00 per 60 minute program

There may be an additional fee involved for supplies with certain programs.

Backyard Farmer

Backyard Farmer airs live Thursday on NET1 at 7pm CDT from April through September. Backyard Farmer Repeats on NET1 Saturdays at 10 am CDT & NETs Create Sundays at 11 am CDT.


Composting Demonstrations

Image of Don Janssen, retired, turning compost bins. Extension Master Gardeners teach how to achieve a proper carbon:nitrogen ratio, or "green" materials vs. "brown" materials and show you several types of structures that can be built or purchased for composting. You'll learn how to construct a compost pile and discuss basic troubleshooting if your compost pile is not breaking down as it should. 

At each program, two random participants will win either a composting thermometer or a composting bin.

Location: Pioneers Park Nature Center. Demonstration site is across the street to the south. Look for the Nebraska Extension banner.
