Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County recognizes the extraordinary efforts of Extension Master Gardener Volunteers (EMGVs) who share their time to provide horticulture knowledge, help with educational programs and assist with dissemination of unbiased research-based information to the general public. A green thumbs up to these special people who are making a difference in our community.
See All Spotlights
Paula Luther has been an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer (EMGV) for 15 years and has volunteered over 600 hours. Paula has mentored new volunteers, answered hundreds of phone questions and served as a 4-H judge at the Lancaster County Super Fair.
Why did you become an EMGV?
I did not come from a farm family, and my gardening efforts were all trial and error, as “I knew nothing.” When I saw the chance to learn more about gardening, I leaped at the opportunity to join the program. After the first day in class, I came home and told my husband, “I finally found my people.”
What is your favorite volunteer opportunity?
Hands down, it is the people I have met in the program. I have met some of my best friends through this program and volunteer activities that we share.
What has been the biggest surprise about volunteering?
That I get more out of volunteering than the organization gets from my efforts! It is always interesting to spend time with the other volunteers and learn more about them and their special garden interests.
