Betty Lou Doty is receiving Lancaster County 4-H’s April “Heart of 4-H Award.” In recent years, she has helped 4-H volunteer Kath Conroy during sewing help sessions for Lancaster County 4-H’ers held at the Sewing Centre of Lincoln (formerly the Bernina Sewing Center). Previously, she volunteered with Saline County 4-H as a parent helper with her daughter’s 4-H club, and helped organize and teach babysitting and first aid clinics in the 1980s.
Betty said, “It has been rewarding to see a person start a sewing project and not even know how to insert a pin, yet in a couple days, cut out fabric, sew straight lines, finish seams, fit the garment to their size and height, enter the 4-H fair and win ribbons. I have enjoyed over the years seeing them develop with more difficult patterns and types of fabrics. Their creativity and ideas on design and style are amazing. I’m glad to see the increased interest in young people wanting to sew.”
