4-H/Extension "Sewing for Hospitals" Community Service Project

"Hats for Hospitals" is Changing to "Masks for Hospitals"

On Monday, April 13, Bryan Health requested 4-H/Extension volunteers to switch from sewing hats to masks! Please finish hats you are currently working on and bring to them to the Extension Office drop box.

Due to COVID-19, Bryan Health in Lincoln has reached out to Lancaster County 4-H and Extension needing sewn, 100% cotton, protective, adult-sized masks for non-medical personnel and patients. For more information about the "Sewing for Hospitals" community service project, contact Extension Associate Kristin Geisert at kristin.geisert@unl.edu.

Seeking Intermediate to Expert Sewers

Adults and youth with intermediate- to high-level sewing skills may help by sewing masks. 4-H youth, former Extension/Family & Community Education club members and other community members may help! Since the finished products need to be sturdy for multi-use by medical professionals, the workmanship of the masks needs to be of the highest quality possible. Intermediate sewers are encouraged to contribute to this effort if an expert sewer in the same household oversees the quality of their work.

Kits With Fabric

If you wish to participate, here is the procedure:

  • Kits containing fabric, elastic, Sewer Info Sheet and instructions to make at least 10 masks (fabric quantity will vary in each kit) may be picked up at the Lancaster Extension Education Center, 444 Cherrycreek Road, Lincoln. (Use the drop box outside the front entrance. This is strictly a drop-off and pick-up point — the office is closed to in-person traffic.)
  • Fill out a Sewer Info Sheet before you drop off the masks.

Use Your Own Fabric

Have 100% cotton fabric (no fleece or flannel) at home and want to start sewing?

  • Fabric must be laundered with detergent, dried in the dryer and pressed before cuttings.
  • Each mask requires two 7" pieces of narrow flat elastic (any width; 1/8"–3/8"), cord or rope elastic. Extra elastic is available in small bags at Lancaster Extension Education Center, 444 Cherrycreek Road, Lincoln. (Use the drop box outside the front entrance. This is strictly a drop-off and pick-up point — the office is closed to in-person traffic.)
  • See handout (pdf): Sewing Written Instructions.
  • Fill out a Sewer Info Sheet before you drop off the masks.

Donate Fabric

Have new, unused 100% cotton fabric (no fleece or flannel) to donate? We request at least 1/2 yard pieces. You may drop fabric off at the Lancaster Extension Education Center, 444 Cherrycreek Road, Lincoln. (Use the drop box outside the front entrance. This is strictly a drop-off and pick-up point — the office is closed to in-person traffic.)

  • Drop off completed masks as soon as possible to the Lancaster Extension Education Center, 444 Cherrycreek Road, Lincoln. (Use the drop box outside the front entrance. This is strictly a drop-off and pick-up point — the office is closed to in-person traffic.)
  • When you drop off sewn masks, you may pick up additional kits to sew if you wish.
