Termites
feed on wood and are important in nature because they
convert dead trees into organic matter which helps the
soil.
Unfortunately,
the wood in buildings is just as appetizing as that
old stump is in your backyard. If termites find wood
on your home, they can cause serious damage.
Nebraska
has subterranean termites. Subterranean termites live
in the ground. They are social insects that live in
colonies. The colony (or nest) of subterranean termites
can be up to 20 feet below the soil surface. These termites
travel through mud tubes to reach food sources like
the cardboard box (shown above).
