The
Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates 2,000 fires,
10 deaths and 100 injuries every year are related to
malfunctioning heat tape.
The
heat tape (photo right) was used in the crawlspace under
a local modular home to keep the main water pipe from
freezing. The heat tape was so brittle it broke apart
as it was removed and replaced. Note it only has a 2-prong
plug. All new heat tapes have a 3-prong plug.
