Butterflies and moths are beautiful. They may act as pollinators for some plants, and are a food source for certain animals. The presence or absence of butterflies is an indicator of the health of our environment.

The beautiful black swallowtail butterfly larvae (shown right) feed on leaves of plants in the parsley family (Apiaceae) including Queen Anne's Lace, carrot, celery and dill. Sometimes plants in the citrus family (Rutaceae) are preferred.

The adult black swallowtail (shown below right) prefers nectar from flowers including red clover, milkweed, and thistles.
